Gay Dwarves of America, by Anne Fleming

Anne Fleming’s book Gay Dwarves of America (Pedlar Press) is a finalist for the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize. The Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize is a BC Book Prize that is awarded to the best work of fiction by a B.C./Yukon resident.

Gay Dwarves of America is a collection of short stories that isn’t about gay dwarves at all. Telling a wide variety of stories from a teen with dwarfism who worries he might be gay to a hockey mom in Toronto who pretends to be Swiss, this collection is playful, humourous and intelligent.

The full list of finalists are:

  • Floating Like the Dead (McClelland & Stewart Ltd.) by Yasuko Thanh
  • Gay Dwarves of America (Pedlar Press) by Anne Fleming
  • Malarky (Biblioasis) by Anakana Schofield
  • Psychology and Other Stories (Biblioasis) by C.P. Boyko
  • The World (Hamish Hamilton Canada) by Bill Gaston

The judges are Joy Gugeler, Theresa Kishkan and Andreas Schroeder. The winners of the award will be announced on May 4th, 2013 at the 29th Annual Lieutenant Governor’s BC Book Prizes Gala in Victoria, British Columbia.
