If your New Year's Resolution was to get your writing out there, here's your chance. The National Capital Writing Contest (NCWC) is now accepting entries for this year's themed competition. This contest is open to persons currently residing in the National Capital Region AND to current members of the CAA-NCR branch. The deadline to enter is February 4, 2011.

Theme: Inspiration Planet Earth – Our Natural Environment Is Life

Send us moving glimpses into places lost, places remembered or places cherished. Send us stirring tales of people affected by their environment. Writers are invited to interpret this theme in any way they wish. Use the theme as the setting, a character, or as any engaging component of your story, essay or poem. Set your creative mind free and be inspired!

Categories for the 24th Annual NCWC:

  • Adult Short Story (max. 2500 words)
  • Youth Short Story or Essay (13–17 yrs.; max. 2500 words)
  • Poetry (not Haiku; max. 60 lines including title & blank lines)

Prizes (in each category):

  • 1st Prize: $500 sponsored by Canadian Authors Association – NCR and Albert Dumont
  • 2nd Prize: $250 sponsored by the Ottawa Citizen
  • 3rd Prize: $100 Collected Works Bookstore and Coffeebar

It is anticipated that all finalists will attend CAA-NCR's 24th Annual NCWC Awards Night, to take place on May 10, 2011 at 7:00 pm in the Ottawa Public Library auditorium. First place winners will be asked to read their entries. Winning entries shall be published in CAA-NCR's e-mag, Byline. Copyright remains with the entrant.
