IFOA Ontario & Open Book: Ontario present a writing competition for students

IFOA Ontario and Open Book: Ontario are thrilled to present Write Across Ontario, a creative writing competition for middle grade and high school students across the province. Students in grades 5 to 12 will write a story using the story-starter provided for their age group by one of four well-known authors. This year, Kevin Sylvester has provided the story-starter for grades 5–6, Richard Scrimger has written one for grades 7–8, Lesley Livingston has written one for grades 9–10 and Dionne Brand has created the story-starter for grades 11–12. The story-starter is used as a place for students to begin their story, but where the story goes from there is in the hands of each individual.

Stories should be between 250–500 words, not including the story-starter. One submission per student will be accepted from September 4, 2013 until the contest closing date of November 8, 2013. Entries will be judged by IFOA in conjunction with Open Book: Ontario. One winner will be chosen from each age group for a total of four (4) winners who will each receive $500 and the opportunity to have their work published online in the Open Book Magazine.

Write Across Ontario is inspired by a similar contest presented by one of IFOA’s Word Alliance partners, the Melbourne Writers Festival. The Word Alliance is a collaboration between literary festivals around the globe, which aims to present the best authors to international audiences at events worldwide.
