Blog Alert! The Urge Reviewing New Canadian Poetry

Stewart Cole

Stewart Cole's blog, The Urge, can be summed up in one sentence he wrote in his first post: "I read things that I’d like to see written about, but they aren’t being written about, so I’m writing about them myself." His latest review of Al Moritz's The New Measures (House of Anansi Press) has just been posted.

Dissatisfied with the lack of poetry reviews available to the public, Stewart decided to take it upon himself to provide his "considered engagement with a single book per month." Each book he reviews will be from the current publishing season and will be divided equally between male and female poets.

Contrary to what some may think, Stewart's past online presence is minimal: he does not have Facebook, nor does he own a cellphone. He even considers The Urge to be a magazine rather than a blog. Stewart has reviewed for many Canadian literary magazines, but he felt that magazine reviews limited both the amount of books reviewed and the audience of reviews. He hopes The Urge will introduce a larger audience not only to reviews of books his they may have read, but also introduce them to books they may have not read or heard of. "This begins as my forum," Stewart writes, "but I’d like it to become a forum."
