Kate Cayley had already found significant acclaim as a poet and YA author before she turned her hand to short fiction, publishing her first collection of short stories, How You Were Born (Pedlar Press) in the fall of 2014. Proving that she's every bit as talented in prose as she is in verse, it was announced on Wednesday evening that Cayley is the winner of the 2015 Trillium Book Award.

She beat out an impressive list of finalists, including previous winners Margaret Atwood and Thomas King.

Check out some of our previous features with Cayley, including her post answering the question "Where in Ontario Do You Write?" and an in-depth interview of Cayley conducted by fellow author Jessica Moore.

The Trillium Poetry Award went to debut author Brecken Hancock (who is, we're proud to say, a previous Open Book writer-in-residence!).

The French awards proved a good day for publisher Les Éditions L’Interligne, which released both Michel Dallaire's French-language Trillium Book Award winner, Violoncelle pour lune d’automne, and Micheline Marchand's children’s literature in French Trillium Book Award winner, Mauvaise mine.

The Trillium Book Award was established to recognize excellence, support marketing and foster increased public awareness of the quality and diversity of Ontario authors and their works. The OMDC, which administers the Trillium Book Awards, calculated that the book publishing industry generates operating revenues of $1.32 billion in the province of Ontario.

Cayley will receive $20,000 in recognition of her achievement, with her publisher Pedlar Press receiving $2,500 to promote How You Were Born. All finalists receive a $500 honorarium. Hancock will receive $10,000 while her publisher, venerable Toronto house Coach House Books will get $2,000 for promotion. The remaining poetry finalists will also receive $500.
