This week at The Globe and Mail website, authors play cupid for their favourite literary characters in celebration of Valentine’s Day. These literary love matches that never happened on the page are highly creative, make sense, yet can be a little bit odd. Andrew Pyper suggests that Anne Shirley and Frankenstein’s Monster would make a great couple, because, being an orphan, Anne would sympathize with the monster’s plight of belonging nowhere and having no one to care about him. Jane Urquhart pairs Nana, the dog from J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan, with the nameless Pomeranian in Chekhov’s story The Lady with the Dog. Robert Sawyer matches To Kill a Mockingbird’s Atticus Finch with Sherlock Holmes, both being intellects who fight for justice. These are just a few of the crazy literary couples that the authors have come up with.
