The 202 kilometre waterway involves a system of 45 locks, most of which continue to be hand operated. It runs from Ottawa to Kingston, incorporating sections of the Rideau and Cataraqui rivers and connecting the Ottawa River and Lake Ontario. It is the oldest continuously operated canal in North America.
