Finalists for the 2013 Archibald Lampman Award will be reading from their work at Raw Sugar Café at 7:30 pm on Thursday, October 17.
The annual award, named after Archibald Lampman (1861 – 1899), one of Canada’s finest nineteenth-century poets and an Ottawa resident for much of his life, honours the outstanding book of poetry by a National Capital Region author. The event is hosted by Arc Poetry Magazine, which administers and presents the $1500 award. The event is free.
The three finalists are:
Christine McNair for Conflict (Toronto; BookThug, 2012), a playful and unpredictable book that creates a delightful adventure for the reader.
Nina Berkhout for elseworlds (Woodstock; Seraphim Editions, 2012), an assured and introspective work that probes the ghostliness of memory.
E. Russell Smith for Petroglyph Beach (Haliburton: The RightEyedDeer Press, 2012), a subtle, astute work of philosophical pastorals.
The 2013 Archibald Lampman Award will be presented on October 22, at the Shenkman Arts Centre, in conjunction with the Ottawa Book Awards.
Arc Poetry Magazine congratulates all of the finalists and their publishers! Arc would also like to thank the 2013 judges Robin Richardson, Andris Taskans and Priscila Uppal.
The event will also feature the 2013 winner of the Diana Brebner Award, given for the best work by an emerging Ottawa-area poet not yet published in book form. The $500 prize was won this year by Marilyn Irwin.
