He writes, edits and does layout and design – a rare combination in the publishing world. James Harbeck, Senior Medical Editor at MediResource Inc. and the designer for the Literary Review of Canada, will be the featured speaker at The Writers’ Community of Durham Region’s next regular breakfast meeting. Pre-registration is required – deadline for registering is 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 6th.

In theatre, someone who sings, dances and acts is called a “triple threat.” If publishing has an equivalent, it certainly includes desktop publishing. James Harbeck traces for you a career trajectory that, with the aid of a “can do” attitude, opens up a broad avenue of opportunity. He is a popular presenter at Editors’ Association of Canada conferences and meetings and has given presentations on editing to classes at Ryerson and Centennial College. James has been an editor, writer, and designer for more than a decade. He is the author of the blog Sesquiotica, which features daily “word tasting notes.”

After the breakfast meeting, for an extra fee of $10 per person, breakfast attendees can take part in a mini-workshop entitled “Yoga for Writers.” Facilitated by certified yoga teacher and writer Jacquelyn O’Brien, this mini-workshop will focus on connecting to your creativity. Guided meditation and breathing techniques will bring peace and clarity to the mind, allowing inspiration to come to the surface and be heard. In addition, a gentle, seated practice working with the neck, shoulders, back, wrists and hands will teach you techniques to use at home to reduce pain and tension. Find the stillness in your mind and leave feeling more relaxed, peaceful and ready to create.

As an alternative, WCDR members attending the breakfast may choose to pay $10 extra to attend a 15-minute, one-on-one blue-pencil session with a published professional or editor after the meeting. These sessions must be booked and paid for in advance by 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 6th (see details at www.wcdr.org).

At The WCDR monthly breakfast meetings, experienced and aspiring writers gather, learn and connect. The April meeting will run from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Registration fees include a hearty breakfast. Fees are $20.00 for members who pre-pay, or $25.00 at the door. The non-member rate is $25.00 and MUST be pre-paid. Tickets for the breakfast are not available at the door.

Ask how you can save by becoming a member! Pre-registration for the April 9th breakfast meeting and mini-workshop is required. Register online at www.wcdr.org, by phone at 905-686-0211 or by email at breakfast@wcdr.org, no later than 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 6.
