Short fiction is in the ascendant, a preferred form for writers at all stages of their career. Ian Williams makes his publishing debut with Not Anyone’s Anything, the recent winner of the Danuta Gleed Award for a first book of short fiction, which the jurors called, “Brilliant, fresh, funny, intelligent.” The Dead Are More Visible is Steven Heighton’s third collection, which traverses the map of human behaviour. David Helwig, founder of the Best Canadian Stories series, has been writing and editing short stories for many decades. This year he releases a translation of Chekhov stories and a new collection of linked stories written entirely in dialogue, Simon Says. These three writers, all of whom have set work in Kingston, read from their stories and discuss the challenges and rewards of writing short. Moderated by Diane Schoemperlen.
