Details

Come and hear two of the countries hottest female authors discuss the experience of writing, being published and being celebrated on opposite ends of the country. Donna Morrissey hails from Nova Scotia which colour her writing with a decidedly east coast flavour. Tricia Dower has stormed the west coast writing scene with her first novel, Stony River. The novel has been getting rave reviews across the country.

Good wine, excellent cheese and the chance to interact with two of Canada’s leading. authors – the perfect start to the incredible literary fall calendar!

Tricia Dower’s novel Stony River is set in a decade we tend to think of as a more innocent time, Stony River shows in dramatic and unexpected ways how perilous it was to come of age in the 1950s with its absent mothers, controlling fathers, biblical injunctions, teenaged longing, and small-town pretence. The threat of sexual violence is all around: angry fathers at home, dirty boys in the neighbourhood, strange men in strange cars, a dead girl, and another gone missing.

An engrossing novel about growing up, finding your voice, and forgiving your family, Stony River is a brilliant story from a remarkable new Canadian voice.

In Donna Morrissey’s The Deception of Livvy Higgs, the title character is besieged by a series of small heart attacks while the ghost of her younger self leads her back through a past devastated by lies and secrets.

Tending to Livvy during her illness is her young next-door neighbour, Gen, a single mother and social-work student. Overnight, a violent scene embroils the two in each other’s lives in a manner that will entwine them forever. In The Deception of Livvy Higgs, the inimitable Morrissey has written a powerful tale, the Stone Angel of the East Coast.
