100 YEARS AFTER HIS DEATH, TOLSTOY’S WIFE TELLS HER STORY...

Hidden for a Century, Previously Unpublished Memoir Provides Insight into the Life of Leo Tolstoy

My Life is an intimate and honest portrait of one of the greatest literary minds of all time and the most important primary document about Tolstoy to be published in decades.

Nearly 150 years after the publication of War and Peace, Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoy continues to be regarded as one of the world’s most accomplished writers. But until now, little attention has been paid to the person closest to him -- his wife, Sofia Andreevna Tolstaya.

On October 6, 2010, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., the University of Ottawa Press will celebrate the publication of the first English edition of Sofia’s memoirs, edited by Andrew Donskov and translated by John Woodsworth and Arkadi Klioutchanski, which she titled My Life. The volume, which reveals important details about Tolstoy that have remained buried for nearly a century, is an invaluable resource.

Mona Nener, Vice-President of Research, and Antoni Lewkowicz, Dean, Faculty of Arts, in collaboration with the University of Ottawa Press, invite you to celebrate the launch of My Life. RSVP by Wednesday, September 29, at www.artsuOttawa.ca/rsvp or to Jessica Clark at 613.562.5800 ext. 1311.
