Have you been bitten by the writing or reading bug? Then perhaps you’d like to meet the author of Bitten, a novel about the world’s only female werewolf! You can do just that on Saturday, October 9, 2010, when The Writers’ Community of Durham Region (WCDR) will host its breakfast meeting in a new location, at the Ajax Convention Centre. The featured speaker will be Kelley Armstrong, the popular author of the Darkest Powers young adult urban fantasy trilogy, the Women of the Otherworld paranormal suspense series, and the Nadia Stafford crime series.

Kelley has been telling stories since before she could write. Her earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to her teachers’ dismay. All efforts to make her produce “normal” stories failed. Today, she continues to spin tales of ghosts, demons, and werewolves, while safely locked away in her basement writing dungeon. She lives in southwestern Ontario, Canada, with her husband, kids, and far too many pets. Kelley’s book “Bitten” is the October selection of WCDR’s Reading as Writers Book Club.

After the meeting, for an extra fee of $10 per person, breakfast attendees can take part in a mini-workshop entitled “30 Seconds of Shameless Self-Promotion.” Facilitated by WCDR member Noelle Bickle, this workshop is aimed at less-seasoned writers looking for a great starting point to feel confident about their writing and toot their own horn. It will also benefit seasoned writers who haven’t taken the time to ready themselves for self-promotion. To maximize the value of this workshop, participants should prepare a brief description of the work they would most like to promote.

The WCDR monthly breakfast meetings are where experienced and aspiring writers gather, learn and connect. Join this vibrant group throughout the year to hear authors and industry speakers, enjoy special events, and broaden your networking circle. Everyone is welcome. The October meeting will run from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The cost, which includes a hearty breakfast, is $15 for members; $20 for guests. (Ask how by becoming a member, you can save!)

Pre-registration for the breakfast meeting and mini-workshop is required. Register online at www.wcdr.org, by phone at 905-686-0211 or by email at breakfast@wcdr.org, no later than noon on Thursday, October 7th.
