Several area authors will visit Port Elgin, Saturday, December 4, to meet readers and sign copies of their books during a special pre-Christmas event supporting South Grey Bruce Youth Literacy Council. The open house at The Brucedale Press from 11 to 3 o’clock features writers of fiction, local history, poetry, nature, and more.

Publisher Anne Duke Judd says, “People like chatting with the writers who create books that interest them, make them laugh or learn. Books to share with children are of special interest, as that makes a strong link between
young people and books.”

The season of decorating the annual Word Wreath begins during the open house. For a donation to Youth Literacy, visitors may hang their inspiring word on the bare wreath. After December 31, all word tags will go to the tutors and learners enrolled in the local program. Program Co-ordinator Dyan Jones says the fundraising initative is “greatly appreciated and it carries both the love of literacy and the spirit of generosity.” SGBYLC can issue receipts for donations of $10 or more. Their fundraiser CD Hear Now is available for giving.

In alphabetical order, featured authors are:

Kathy Bell of Owen Sound, author of last year’s hit novel, Regression, returns with the sequel, Evolussion, second in the Infinion series.

Poet Jennifer Frankum has three books, including the new chapbook, Into the Wilderness: a temple at Sharon, launched at this year’s Words Alive Festival.

Robin Hilborn celebrated Southampton’s 150th with a series of newspaper columns telling of the town’s past. Now expanded in book form with many photographs, Southampton Vignettes is an expression of his passion for this community.

Anne Duke Judd marked forty years in Bruce County by collaborating with Tara artist Kenneth Thornburn in creating BRUCE Day by Day, a day-book celebrating the county’s heritage. She also contributed to the Writers’ BLOC recent story collection, Fibs & Memories.

Donna Mann’s books Aggie’s Storms and the newly released Aggie’s Dream, show how the early years shaped the achievements of Agnes Macphail, Canada’s first woman MP.

Mike Pickup of Southampton is well known to every birder and naturalist for miles around. His books, Birding the Bruce Peninsula and Birding Saugeen Shores, offer travel guidance to the best birding spots in all seasons.

Mabel Brown Williamson grew up on Lone Elm Farm near Keady. From family photo albums, diaries, and memories, she has compiled Barn Stories: a social history of farm life that evokes the 1940s, 50s, and 60s.
