Authors Eva Tihanyi and Bobbie Kalman share childhood memories of growing up in Hungary during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. Each author will share from her own works, readings that are very personal about themes that are universal — “the difficulties of starting over, the importance of positive thinking, and the significance of human rights,” according to Kalman.

Tihanyi was born in Budapest. Her parents left Hungary in order to escape from Communist rule after the Hungarian Uprising of October 1956, so she was raised by her grandparents until the family was re-united in 1962. Tihanyi has taught English at Niagara College since 1989. She has published seven books of poetry, the most recent being Flying Underwater and a collection of short stories.

Kalman is the author of over 900 non-fiction children’s books and is a familiar name to teachers and children alike. When Kalman was nine, her family escaped the Hungarian Revolution. Her book, Refugee Child, written to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the revolution details her memories of her experiences.
