The Writers’ Community of Durham Region (WCDR) is pleased to announce that on January 26, 2014, award-winning instructor Kathryn Kuitenbrouwer will lead a workshop on short fiction writing — just in time for writers to brush up on their short story skills before entering the 2014 WCDR Short Story Contest [with Sarah Selecky].
This fun, day-long workshop will unravel the mystery and allure of the short story while focusing on exercises, instruction, in-depth discussion, and constructive class feedback. Topics include plot, structure, character development, dialogue, prose styles, and other fiction fundamentals. Participants are encouraged to leave their internal editor at home. This day will be about not judging, not deciding, and not knowing. Registrants are asked to read “A Tiny Feast,” by Chris Adrian, which will be used as an example during the workshop.
The workshop will run from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 26, 2014, at the Trent University Oshawa Campus (55 Thornton Rd. S), room 115. The cost is $85 for WCDR, WCYR, and WCSC members, and $95 for non-members. Please note that lunch is not included; please bring your own lunch or be prepared to drive to a local coffee shop. Some vending machines are on the premises, but we cannot guarantee what items will be available.
Pre-registration is required. To register, or for more information about this great workshop, visit the WCDR website.
