In the month of April, Richmond Hill Public Library will be joining libraries across Canada in celebration of poetry and its vital place in Canadian culture. Hosted by author Barry Dempster, poets include:
Kimmy Beach's fifth book, The Last Temptation of Bond (The University of Alberta Press), was featured on The Next Chapter with Shelagh Rogers, and was chosen as one of the top five poetry books of the year in Quill & Quire's 2013 Readers' Poll. Kimmy lives in Red Deer, Alberta.
Barry Dempster, twice nominated for the Governor General’s Award, is the author of 16 collections of poetry. In 2010, he was a finalist for the Ontario Premiers Award for Excellence in the Arts. His second novel, The Outside World, was published this past December. He is acquisitions editor for Brick Books and the April Writer-in-Residence at Open Book.
Jeramy Dodds's first collection, Crabwise to the Hounds (Coach House Books, 2008), won the Trillium Book Award for poetry and was nominated for the Griffin Poetry Prize. His English translation of The Poetic Edda will be published later this year.
Elizabeth Greene has published two collections of poetry, with a third, Understories, poised to enter the world this spring. She edited and contributed to the award-winning We Who Can Fly: Poems, Essays and Memories in Honour of Adele Wiseman. Two of her poems were shortlisted for the Descant/Winston Collins Prize in 2010 and 2012.
Ann Shin is a writer and filmmaker based in Toronto whose work has been published and screened around the world. Her most recent book of poetry, The Family China, won the 2013 Anne Green Award. Her latest documentary, The Defector won several awards and was nominated for 3 Canadian Screen Awards.
Paul Vermeersch's fifth collection of poetry Don't Let It End Like This Tell Them I Said Something will be published by ECW Press in 2014. His previous books have been finalists for the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award and the Trillium Book Award. He lives in Toronto where he works as senior editor of Wolsak & Wynn publishers.
