Details
Penn Kemp presents such an experience in her Sound Opera, Helwa!, with superb musicians in an event hosted by The Circle! Let sound carry you back and across to Egypt, heart of the earth’s land mass. Together we will trace the soul’s journey across the nocturnal sky to rebirth the next day: a classical Egyptian journey that the star goddess Nut took nightly. The title, Helwa, means "beautiful" in Arabic.
Poet Penn Kemp, flautist Debbie Danbrook, dance artist Ruth Douthwright and percussionist Jocelyn Drainie will be performing to an electro-acoustic soundtrack by composer Bill Gilliam. This evening will launch the CD, Helwa! a sound opera: experiencing ancient Egypt, Pendas Productions. It was first performed live with Penn and musician / composer Bill Gilliam at The Drake Hotel, Toronto, for "Poetry, Process, Performance", alternative word cabaret. Helwa! was then recorded by producer John Magyar with Bill and Penn at Psychospace Studios in Toronto. Bill's prerecorded electroacoustic composition on the CD will be played in the performance.
Also being performed is Penn's "poem for peace in many voices" in Daniel Kolos's translation into Ancient Egyptian: perhaps the first time for millennia that a poem has been translated back into heiroglyphics! www.mytown.ca/poemforpeace
