An afternoon of acclaimed poetry presented in partnership with the Plan 99 Reading Series at the Manx Pub.

Nyla Matuk drew the inspiration for Sumptuary Laws, from the feudal rules that once regulated social rank by legislating what a person was permitted to wear and eat. She transports these bizarre laws to the 21st century in her wildly imaginative and linguistically daring poems.”

Matthew Tierney’s most recent book of poetry is Probably Inevitable. His high-energy poems are jolted by the philosophy and the science of time. The poems sail through the rhythms of a world made concrete by Samuel Johnson before it was undone by Niels Bohr. Tierney uses his wit and legerdemain to grapple with the gap between what’s seen and what’s experienced.

The Hard Return by Marcus McCann, is either a broken list of metaphors for the human heart or a troubling elegy for a disposable world. Alternating between loving descriptions of 21st century excess and awkward social situations, Marcus McCann’s poems are sincere and ironic, sad and half-joking, often in the same instant.
