The Writers’ Community of Durham Region (WCDR) is kicking off 2014 with short story writer Sarah Selecky! At our January 11, 2014 RoundTable, Sarah will talk about the dos and don’ts of short story contest entries and, since she’s personally reading all submissions for this year’s WCDR Short Story Contest, this is a great opportunity to see what makes this judge sit up and take note.

Pre-registration is required for the RoundTable—deadline for registering is 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 8, 2014.

Sarah Selecky is both a recognized master and a lover of the short story form and believes it’s currently undergoing a renaissance, especially in Canada. She is the author of This Cake is for The Party, which was a finalist for the Scotiabank Giller Prize, shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize, longlisted for the Frank O’Connor Short Story award, won the CBC Book Award for the best new writer of 2010, and appeared in The Globe 100: Best Canadian Fiction list for 2010. Her writing has been published in The Walrus, ELLE Canada, Geist, The New Quarterly, Prairie Fire and a variety of newspapers and magazines. In 2011, Selecky created Story is a State of Mind, an internationally acclaimed online writing program, and in September 2013, she announced a collaborative project with Margaret Atwood: an online Master Class on novel writing.

At the monthly WCDR RoundTable, experienced and aspiring writers gather, learn, and connect over a gourmet breakfast at the Ajax Convention Centre on Beck Crescent, south of Highway 2, off Chambers Drive, near Salem Road. The January 11 meeting will run from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Registration fees are $25.00 for members who pre-pay, or $30.00 at the door. The non-member rate is $35.00 and MUST be pre-paid.

Pre-registration is required. Ask how you can save by becoming a member! Register online at www.wcdr.org, by phone at 905-686-0211 or by email at breakfast@wcdr.org, no later than 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 8. Anyone who registers by phone or email must indicate their breakfast menu option or will receive the Chef's Special.
