“Terror” and “Hope” – those two words shaped the post-9/11 world. The two concepts made headlines with the attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001 and Barack Obama’s book The Audacity of Hope in 2008. Join in the conversation on the situation in Afghanistan and the twin forces of terror and hope that continue to define our relationship with the Middle East.

From 2005 to 2009, Chris Alexander was the UN deputy special representative in Afghanistan during the largest UN political mission in the world. Now the Conservative Member of Parliament for Ajax-Pickering, he has written The Long Way Back: Afghanistan's Quest for Peace.

In December 2008, Canadian diplomat Robert Fowler, acting as the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy to Niger, was kidnapped by Al Qaeda, becoming the highest ranked UN official ever held captive. From that agony he wrote A Season in Hell: My 30 Days in the Sahara with El Qaeda.

You’ll find Michael Petrou wherever terror is an everyday occurrence. The author of Is This Your First War?: Travels Through the Post-9/11 Islamic World, he is one of Canada’s foremost foreign correspondents. Within weeks of the 9/11 attacks, Petrou returned to Afghanistan as a reporter, slipping across the border as rockets and tracer bullets lit up the night sky, carrying notebooks, stolen blankets and a satellite phone.
