How does an author get an editor’s attention? How does a manuscript stand out in the slush pile? On Saturday October 8th, the Writers' Community of Durham Region invites you to enjoy breakfast with Craig Pyette senior editor in the Knopf Random Canada Publishing Group will offer pragmatic advice about the query letter and its role in the publishing industry. Craig will cover four topics: what editors do, what challenges editors and publisher face in the digital age, what they look for in a submission, and a few tricks of the writer’s craft. He’ll round up the discussion with a flash assessment of six WCDR member query letters and first page submissions. He’s not going to hold anything back during his review. The truth, however joyous or painful, will be shared live in front of everyone. Will he turn the page to read any of the manuscripts? Come to the breakfast and find out.

After the meeting, for an extra fee of $10 per person, breakfast attendees can take part in a mini workshop titled “Reading Your Work in Public” with Lucy Brennan.

Event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Pre-registration is required – deadline for registering is 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct 5th. Registration fees include a hearty breakfast. Fees are $20.00 for members who pre-pay, or $25.00 at the door. The non-member rate is $25.00. Tickets for the breakfast are not available at the door.
