Details
On Saturday December 10th at the regular breakfast meeting of The Writers’ Community of Durham Region (WCDR) author Wayson Choy will speak about writing stories based on one’s life. Readers of his works will agree that he is a master at communicating personal experiences through creative non-fiction and memoir writing.
Deadline for registering is 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec 7th.
Wayson Choy is an author, educator and speaker. His memoir Paper Shadows: A Chinatown Childhood (1999), won the Edna Staebler Award for Creative Non-Fiction and was nominated for a Governor General’s Award, was a Finalist for the Charles Taylor Prize for Literary Non-Fiction and was named as a 1999 Globe and Mail notable book of the year.
After the meeting, for an extra fee of $10 per person, breakfast attendees can take part in a mini workshop titled “The Not Necessarily for Playwrights Dialogue Writing Workshop.” Unlike plays, novels or short stories do not have to rely entirely on dialogue. If used however, it is very important in showing who the characters are. Facilitated by Mike Khashmanian this workshop will discover the world of creating believable dialogue. Michael is a mediator, playwright, actor, poet and song writer. He has written several plays, all of which have been performed in Durham Region. He is currently the driving force behind the Durham Theatre Festival, an annual festival of the performing arts.
As an alternative, WCDR members attending the breakfast may choose to pay $10 extra to attend a 15-minute, one-on-one blue-pencil session with a published professional or editor after the meeting.
