WCDR Slam !!

It happened last July, and it’s bound to happen again. If you hear whooping and hollering coming from south Durham Region on Saturday, blame it on The Writers’ Community of Durham Region (WCDR), which has a fun competition in store for its breakfast meeting. Each year in lieu of a speaker, this summer event involves an interactive exercise with the audience – A slam involves writers reading/performing their original pieces in under three minutes and evoking emotion from the audience. The breakfast meeting will be held on Saturday, July 9, 2011 from 8:30 to 11am at the Ajax Convention Centre.

Pre-registration is required – deadline for registering is 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 6th.

Recently, WCDR members auditioned by reading/performing original work in a variety of genres. The panel of judges included WCDR past president, Sue Reynolds, WCDR board member Sally Moore, and former board members Dorothea and Rich Helms. At the auditions, they held up Olympic-style numbers, rated the performances and selected the top seven (7) to compete at the July breakfast meeting. Audience members can come prepared with signs, whistles, pompoms or whatever to cheer for their favourites. The prize for the top SLAMMER includes $100 plus a spectacular trophy!

At the breakfast event, the audience will vote to determine the winner. While the votes are being counted, Special Guest Performer Eytan Crouton will entertain the group. Eytan won the Toronto Poetry Slam Championship this year and represented Toronto in the National Individual Slam Championships in Vancouver in April. He is a member of the Toronto Poetry Slam Team, which will be competing in various North American slam competitions throughout 2011.

Everyone attending must register in advance. Fees are $20.00 for members who pre-pay, or $25.00 at the door. The non-member rate is $25.00 and MUST be pre-paid. No tickets will be available at the event.
Fees cover the cost of a hearty breakfast.
