Your Character’s Voice: Dialogue in Fiction and Memoir

Monday December 2 & Tuesday December 3 2013

6:00 to 8:30 p.m.

Back-to-back evenings at Trent University’s Oshawa Campus

Explore dialogue with author Ruth E. Walker and discover what well-drawn chatter has done for successful writers. From technical basics to experimental approaches, this is an immersion in the voices of character.

Whether you are writing fiction or memoir, the voices you include need to engage readers while their spoken words “fit” into the narrative. Choose the right words to put into your characters’ mouths.

Monday night will focus on the nuts and bolts of dialogue:
*technical DOs and DON’Ts of writing dialogue
*the purpose of dialogue in narrative
*when it is too chatty or too silent
*character voice vs narrative voice

Tuesday night will focus on experimenting with various forms of dialogue:
*the illusions of conversation
*dialect, body language and character tics
*revealing character, plot and setting through dialogue

Both nights will include discussion, fun writing exercises and helpful handouts to keep for later reference.

Ruth E. Walker is the author of the novel Living Underground, now in its second printing. Reviewers agree that Ruth writes character well: On her novel: ”Its characters are full of depth, and the emotional anguish they experience is palpable.” (Laura Hamilton) ”Ruth Walker reveals the inner lives of her characters with a quiet and purposeful grace. An impressive debut.” (Rabindranath Maharaj)
