"The Incongruous Quarterly is now accepting submissions of unpublishable fiction and poetry for its second issue, featuring guest editors Saleema Nawaz and Karen Correia Da Silva.
The deadline for submissions is November 1st, 2010.
The fiction theme is “Music.”
The poetry theme is “Collage.” Disconnected or disorganized? Pastiche or plagiarism? We’re looking for mosaics and mash-ups. The technique of collage in poetry is much like its counterpart in visual art; that of mixing, mashing, and gluing – sometimes haphazardly – words together. Think cut ups, bits of found text, pastiche, mixed genre, or multimedia. We want botched prosodics, exploding sentences, or just plain wack word fusions that would make any Formalist cringe.
We are also accepting work off-theme.

About the guest editors:
Fiction: Saleema Nawaz’s fiction has appeared in journals including Grain, The New Quarterly and PRISM International, and her short story “My Three Girls” won the 2008 Writers’ Trust of Canada / McClelland & Stewart Journey Prize. Her debut collection of short stories, Mother Superior, was released in Fall 2008.
Poetry: Karen Correia Da Silva is a Toronto-based poet, editor, performance artist and graphic designer. She is the founder and Editor-in-Chief of the art collective and webzine Steel Bananas, Associate Editor of Existere: Journal of Arts and Literature, the Assistant Editor and Designer of the literary press Tightrope Books, and a ‘pataphysician with the Toronto art collective TransCanadada Motorway Services. In 2009 she co-edited GULCH: An Assemblage of Poetry and Prose (Tightrope Books), and is currently pursuing her MA while working as a Teaching and Research Assistant at Ryerson University.
Guidelines
Please read our guidelines before you submit something. If you don’t follow them, we can’t read your work.
What We Want
The Incongruous Quarterly accepts fiction and poetry. There are deadlines for each issue, but we read in between deadlines, so you can always submit.
We particularly like the following things:
Unpublishable stories and poems. Look over here for a little more about what this means. If you don’t know where else to send your story, send it to us.
Work that’s been rejected by other magazines/websites/newspapers/journals/etc. We can’t promise that previous rejections will get your piece into the Quarterly, but stuff that’s been rejected by other people tends to be the kind of stuff we like (as long as it’s good).
Submissions on theme. You don’t have to do this, but it would be nice if you did. You can find out about themes in our calls for submissions (which will be posted at the top of this page whenever they exist), through our newsletter, facebook page or twitter.
Previously unpublished writers. We like nothing more than reading really good work by someone who’s never been published before, so don’t be shy.
What We Don’t Want
Bad writing. We’re probably not interested in poems that look like cats, uninteresting pornography, Billy Collins, etc. Use your best judgment. You’re smart and we trust you.
How We Want It
The Incongruous Quarterly reads blind. To help us do this, you have to format your submission according to these guidelines. In the body of the email, please include the following things:
* Name
* Story title
* Contact information
* Bio
Attach a copy of your submission with no name or contact information anywhere in the text.
Please format your submission this way – if you don’t, we won’t be able to read it, and that makes us sad.
Simultaneous submissions are fine. Work that’s been published elsewhere is not our favourite. We don’t have a word limit.
