Following an evening of readings by 19 of Canada’s upcoming and established poets as part of the 3rd annual battle of the bards, Poetry NOW, Authors at Harbourfront Centre (AUTHORS) is pleased to announce that Gary Barwin and David Groulx have been crowned co-winners of the event as a result of their performances. A jury comprising Toronto’s Poet Laureate Dionne Brand, Authors at Harbourfront Centre Director Geoffrey Taylor and Artistic Associate Jen Tindall selected both authors to win invitations to read at the world renowned International Festival of Authors (IFOA) (October 19 to 29, 2011) and have their books advertised in NOW Magazine.
Gary Barwin was the co-winner of the 2010 bpNichol chapbook award for Inverting the Deer and was a recipient of the KM Hunter Foundation Artist award. He edits supernova tadpole editions for Paper Kite Press and is also the author of several acclaimed books for kids. Barwin read from The Porcupinity of the Stars, a collection that touches on family, loss, wonder and the shifting, often perplexing nature of consciousness.
David Groulx was raised in the Northern Ontario mining community of Elliot Lake and is proud of his Native roots. He studied creative writing at the En’owkin Centre, BC, where he won the Simon J. Lucas Jr. Memorial Award for poetry. He is the author of Night in the Exude, The Long Dance, Under god’s pale bones, which he read from at Poetry NOW, and Until The Bullets Rose, forthcoming in 2011.
AUTHORS has also invited 3 additional Poetry NOW participants to read at IFOA: Ruth Roach Pierson (Contrary), Souvankham Thammavongsa (Found) and Zachariah Wells (Track & Trace).
In February 2011, AUTHORS, in partnership with NOW Magazine, invited submissions from poets whose works have been published within the past five years and are currently in print with a trade publisher. AUTHORS selected 20 readers via a random draw of all eligible submissions following the deadline for submissions on February 28. The poets selected read on the evening of March 30 in Harbourfront Centre’s Brigantine Room, with the exception of Inge Israel, who was unable to attend due to illness.
