Briarpatch magazine, based out of Regina, SK, has announced its first annual creative writing contest. They are calling for original, unpublished writing in short fiction and creative non-fiction (memoir, personal essay, literary journalism) with a focus on political, social and environmental issues. They encourage anyone with something to say to submit their writing, even if they do not consider them self to be a writer.
Each submission must be no more than 2500 words, and the deadline is December 1st at midnight. The contest is open to Canadian and international writers. The winners will be posted on the Briarpatch website in January.
First prize in each category is $250 and publication of each winning piece in the summer 2012 issue of Briarpatch. Runners-up will be published online and receive a $50 prize.
The contest will be judged by writer and activist Lee Maracle. She is a critically acclaimed author and has written, among others, First Wives Club, Ravensong, Bobbi Lee, Will’s Garden, Bent Box, and I Am Woman. She is currently a mentor and teacher at the University of Toronto.
