Canada Writes has announced that David Martin of Calgary, AB is the winner of the 2014 CBC Poetry Prize. David's winning poem "Tar Swan" was selected from more than 2,500 entries received from across the country. The jury, comprised of poets Roy Miki, Rachel Rose and Katherena Vermette said David's poem "urgently speaks to central concerns of our time, particularly here in Canada: the consequences of coal and oil extraction, environmental degradation and our responsibility to the natural world."
As the grand-prize winner, David will receive a $6,000 prize from Canada Council for the Arts, see his poem published in the October issue of Air Canada's enRoute Magazine and receive a two-week residency at The Banff Centre. He will also be celebrated at the International Festival of Authors in Toronto as part of The Poet Summit on October 25.
