The winners of the Griffin Poetry Prize were announced last night at a ceremony in Toronto. Dionne Brand was named the Canadian winner for her book, Ossuaries (McClelland & Stewart). Gjertrud Schnackenberg took home the international prize for her book, Heavenly Questions (Farrar, Straus and Giroux). They were each awarded $65,000.

At the ceremony, the poets shortlisted for the Griffin Poetry Prize each received a leather-bound edition of their book and a $10,000 honorarium. French poet and essayist Yves Bonnefoy was honoured with The Griffin Trust For Excellence In Poetry's 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Griffin Poetry Prize Anthology: A Selection of the 2011 Shortlist (House of Anansi Press) is edited by Tim Lilburn and is available at most bookstores. Royalties generated from the annual Griffin Poetry Prize anthologies are donated to UNESCO’s World Poetry Day.
