"Finding a Voice": Kingston’s Local Poetry Radio Show

Every Friday, Bruce Kauffman takes the airways on Kingston’s CFRC 101.9 FM to showcase local poetry talent. Broadcasting from Queen’s University, “Finding a Voice” in large part features poetry readings, often clips from open mic poetry series and book launches. “It has always been more magical for me, hearing poetry over reading poetry; it just seems to add another dimension,” says Kauffman. He also tries to bring in monthly guests to interview live and give them a chance to read their work.

The program, which has been on air since May of last year, focuses on “exposing people’s voices to a much bigger audience,” says Kauffman. “There’s such diversity in poetry and spoken word and voice. I don’t think a lot of people are aware of that,” he continues. “That’s what you get with the radio; you can just open it up so that more people are familiar with exactly what poetry can do.”

“Finding a Voice” airs every Friday at 4 p.m., extended during the summer for an extra hour until 6 p.m.
