From the Writers' Community of Durham Region:

The Wild Words Anthology will be wearing a bright spiffy jacket, thanks to Ivano Stocco of Guelph. He’s the winner of the Wild Words cover art competition. Mr. Stocco’s cover design will grace an anthology of the top stories from WCDR’s Wild Words prose competition.

The award-winning, self-taught painter’s colourful abstract design caught the eye of contest judge David Schembri of Surfacing magazine. Schembri describes it as a strong cover that will attract readers. A professional graphic designer, our judge chose the design for its energy and vibrancy. He notes that because the image is not overly specific, it lends itself to the diversity of the stories within.

Ivano was delighted to learn that the 1.5 m mixed media painting, currently hanging in his kitchen, had snagged first prize. “It’s wonderful to win the award. This was my first stab at a book cover. I was quite surprised to find that I’d won.”

Mr. Stocco will be presented with his $150 prize at WCDR’s April 9 breakfast meeting. He will also receive a contributor's copy of the book, to be launched May 26 by The Writers’ Community of Durham Region (WCDR.) Designs contributed by Markham artist Patty Chu and WCDR’s own Karen Richardson (Port Perry) received honourable mention in the contest which attracted 22 entries.

The Wild Words anthology will be available through WCDR, at various writing and literary events as well as online. Details on purchasing the anthology and the May 26 launch party will appear soon on the WCDR website at www.wcdr.org.
