The book The Underground Railroad: the long journey to freedom in Canada by Ottawa writer L. D. Cross has won the initial Ontario Historical Society (OHS) Huguenot Award. This is the first time the Huguenot Society of Canada award has been presented by the OHS. It honours “the best book or substantial article published in Ontario in the past three years which has brought public awareness to the principles of freedom of conscience and freedom of thought”.
The book is part of the Amazing Stories series published by James Lorimer & Company Ltd. of Toronto. It recounts one of the great escape stories of North America. People were not trying to sneak into Canada they were trying to sneak out of the US. The Underground Railroad: the long journey to freedom in Canada (ISBN-10: 1-55277-581-X / ISBN-13: 978-1-55277-581-3) details not only how slaves escaped into Canada but what they accomplished once they settled here. They arrived with skills needed at the time — farming, trades, commerce — and they set to work supporting themselves and their families.
