City Living:

In B.K. Anderson's Gladdy's Wake (Second Story Press), a Northern Ontario runaway who lands in New York City in the 1920s has an effect on the life of a Muslim woman whose son is accused of being involved in a terrorism plot decades later in post-9/11 New York.

"I don't know Toronto. I know here." A young Saskatchewan girl contemplates the place she lives and her family's move to Toronto. Laurel Croza's I Know Here (Groundwood Books) was a finalist for the Governor General's Awards for its illustrations by Matt James.

Inspector Green investigates a murder in snow-bound Ottawa in Barbara Fradkin's Beautiful Lie the Dead (RendezVous Crime).

Set in present-day Toronto, Bianca Lakoseljac's Bridge in the Rain (Guernica Editions) is a collection of short stories that are linked by an inscription on a bench in High Park.

Shawn Micallef's Stroll: Psychogeographic Walking Tours of Toronto (Coach House Books) features 32 walks and includes illustrations by Marlena Zuber, tips for each walk (e.g. "Pack a lunch") and a nifty fold-out orientation map of Toronto.

Step back in time to Victorian London with the four books in Shane Peacock's meticulously researched and award-winning Boy Sherlock Holmes Series (Tundra Books).

Shortlisted for the Governor General's Award for Poetry, Sandy Pool's Exploding into Night (Guernica Editions) is based on a murder that took place in Toronto's Parkdale. In an interview with Open Book, Pool said, "The poem speaks in many voices; including that of killer, victim and the conscience of the city itself."

TOK Anthology: Writing the New Toronto, Book 5 (Zephyr Press) features Anthony De Sa, Emma Donoghue, Nalo Hopkinson, Shyam Selvadurai, M.G. Vassanji plus 13 emerging writers.
