Ideas & Inspiration:

Award-winning novelist and critic André Alexis explores a life of literature in his stimulating and personal collection of essays, Beauty and Sadness (House of Anansi Press).

Set in Toronto's Allan Gardens Public Library, The Incident Report (Pedlar Press) by Martha Baillie is a literary mystery and erotic love story examining the fragmentation of contemporary urban life.

Oleg Lipechenko brings both well-known and forgotten nursery rhymes to life with his beautiful and detailed illustrations in Humpty Dumpty and Friends (Tundra Books).

In the reflective poetry collection Light and Time (Guernica Editions), Michael Mirolla plays the role of metaphysical detective, revealing the nuances in "a world [that] lives as you live / Speaks as you speak."

Robin Muller's richly illustrated children's classic The Nightwood, a retelling of the Celtic folktale of Tamlynne, has just been brought back into by print by Tundra Books.

The work of beloved poet and artist P.K. Page is celebrated in Kaleidoscope (The Porcupine's Quill), the first of ten volumes to be published over the next decade in tandem with an online hypermedia edition of the Collected Works of P. K. Page.

As is often the case with his work, Book (Pedlar Press) by Ken Sparling defies description. But this collection of delightful and unpredictable notes builds to a crescendo of human activity that brings the seemingly insignificant into new focus.

Enter the world of Cordelia Strube's Lemon (Coach House Press), the bitingly funny protagonist of the novel by the same name. With three peculiar mothers and one deadbeat father, Lemon decides to opt out of sex and violence and cancer in favour of Jane Eyre and Mary Wollstonecraft.
