David Johnson, Canada’s Governor General, announced 50 new appointees to the Order of Canada on June 30. Among those were a notable few from Ontario’s literary community: Nino Ricci, Malcolm Gladwell and David Staines.
Ricci was honoured with the order for “his contributions to Canadian literature as a renowned author.” The Toronto-based, best-selling author is best known for his award-winning The Origin of Species and more recently Lives of the Saints.
Gladwell was also honoured for his charitable work and contributions as a journalist and author. The New Yorker staffer raised in Elmira, Ont. has written several non-fiction best-sellers, the most recent of which is What The Dog Saw: And Other Adventures, a compilation of his pieces for the New Yorker.
University of Ottawa professor Staines was also awarded the order for “his contributions as a champion of Canadian literature and mentor to young writers.” Staines, who is also an editor and critic, has dedicated several years to research and essays on Canadian literature.
The ceremony date is yet-to-be set.
