Ah, those fond memories of opening the mailbox and finding a new issue of OWL Magazine. The popular kids' magazine is 35 years old in June. Happy birthday OWL Magazine! The magazine's publisher, OwlKids, is celebrating the milestone with exciting events and contests. Keep reading for the details.

From our friends at OwlKids:

For 35 years, children across Canada have eagerly awaited the arrival of their new issue of OWL Magazine in their mailbox each month. This June, Owlkids — publisher of OWL (ages 9 to 13), chickaDEE (ages 6 to 9), Chirp (ages 3 to 6), and Owlkids Books — celebrates this milestone with fun events, contests, giveaways, a Special Collector’s Edition and one very cool T-shirt.

Parents across the country fondly remember their own excitement at the arrival of OWL in their classroom or in the mailbox. And much of what those parents enjoyed in the pages of OWL as kids growing up in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s — engaging articles, weird facts, fun craft projects, puzzles, jokes, recipes, comics and more — is still found in the magazine today. OWL continues to produce award-winning content that is both educational and engaging. With more than 300,000 readers each month, it’s clear this latest generation of OWL readers loves it as much as their parents did.

OWL is a veritable Canadian institution,” says Group Publisher, Jennifer Canham. “It has touched the lives of millions of Canadians — and many parents are rediscovering the joy of OWL introducing it to their children today. I know I am.”

To mark the magazine’s 35th Anniversary, the OWL editors asked some of their favourite Canadian authors — including Cary Fagan, Carol Matas and Arthur Slade — to contribute original stories inspired by a “birthday word.” Kenneth Oppel’s story, featuring the word “party” appears in the June Birthday issue. This Special Collector’s Edition also features guest editor Annabel Slaight, co-founder of OWL.

Kids in British Columbia will celebrate with OWL in person when OWL Editor Craig Battle entertains more than 650 kids with an eco-themed presentation featuring crafts, science facts, jokes and more. Craig and friends will be at Willowbrook Shopping Centre in Langley, B.C., from May 31st to June 3rd. And on June 30th at Toronto’s CN Tower — which celebrates its own 35th birthday this year — young readers can get free copies of all Owlkids’ magazines.

And for OWL lovers of all ages, the creative team at Owlkids has produced an awesome retro-style anniversary T-shirt, featuring the original logo, in kids and adult sizes.

Thirty-five years after its first issue, OWL continues to be a trusted, reliable brand that parents and kids love. In a world that’s overwhelmed by text messages, tweets and television, kids still love reading — and they especially love reading OWL.
